Get started to become a driving instructor

As long as you fulfill the criteria and you’re a competent driver you can become a driving instructor and start earning sooner than you’d think.

IDT has been conducting ADI Training since 1974 and some of our original staff are still on the Consultancy Board. Practical driving experience runs through our veins.

The criteria

To become a driving instructor in the UK you don’t need any formal qualifications, but the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) requires the following:

  • A full UK or European Union / European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence, held for at least four years.
  • No disqualification from driving at any time in the four years before you train.
  • The ability to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5 metres (90 feet).
  • An enhanced level Disclosure & Barring Service check (replaced the CRB in 2013)
  • To be a ‘fit and proper’ person, in the opinion of the DSA.

Any motoring or non-motoring convictions will be taken into account when you’re assessed for inclusion on the Register.

Earn while you learn

We can offer you a guaranteed job when you become a driving instructor with IDT Driving School, local to your home, once you’ve passed your DSA Part 1 and Part 2 Exams and completed your 40 hours basic training.

This qualifies you for a DSA ‘Trainee Licence’ which means you can teach students full or part time on an ‘earn while you learn’ basis. You will also receive practical help and further training BEFORE you take the Part 3 Exam.

We’ll train you to become a driving instructor at your own pace and at times that suit you. It often takes just nine to 12 months to qualify. But if you have the time and you’re a quick learner, it could be far sooner.

“The training was conducted professionally and in a progressive manner. The course was well structured and covered all aspects of business and teaching required to make a successful start in the profession.”

Pay As You Go

Many driving schools expect full payment before their courses start. We do not. As we like you to sample our service, you only “pay-as-you-go” at an amount you can afford.

Our training fees are very competitive and all our Part 2 and Part 3 training is carried out on a one-to-one basis – something some other training bodies would find impossible to match.

If you aren’t satisfied with our training you can cancel your payments at any time. All part payments are non-refundable once you’ve started training with us.

We have a £50 non-returnable Registration Fee for initially setting up your training details. So you may need to pay the Registration Fee again if you wish to re-start your training with us at a later date.

What are the costs?

Total cost for Part 1, 2 & 3 Basic Training from £1798 (subject to area & availability). Costs include:

  • One-to-One Training Sessions
  • Manuals
  • Reference Books
  • Data Sheets
