Driving Instruction is a rewarding career and with our help and working at your own pace, you will soon be able to run your own driving school, work local to home and choose your own working hours. You could earn up to £28.50 per hour, dependent on your Area, even part time.

You need to pass three separate examinations set by the DSA, known as Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. The Part 2 examination will be taken after Part 1 has been passed and Part 3 will follow after that.

Our Part 1 training, to develop your knowledge on driving is a ‘Home Study Course’ which allows you to fit in with your own lifestyle and includes regular postal answer marking at one of our Training Administration Centres. You will also be given a personal telephone ‘help line’.

You can sit the Part 1 examination local to where you live and will be required to pass both a ‘multiple choice’ examination consisting of 100 questions and a Hazard Perception Test.

Our Part 2 training, to develop your driving skills to the required standard will be timed to suit your own circumstances and is normally carried out on a one-to-one basis with a dedicated personal Trainer unlike most other training courses, where two or three learn in the car at the same time. Our Training will be available reasonably local to where you live and will be conducted over several mutually agreeable timed sessions with a break between each to allow you to practice.

The Part 2 examination is based on the normal ‘L’ Test but is marked at a higher standard and lasts for an full hour.

Our Part 3 training, to develop your skills as a teacher, again unlike most other training courses, is normally carried out on a one-to-one basis reasonably local to where you live. It comprises 40 hours Basic Training and to succeed at this examination you will need to identify student faults, work out why the fault happened and then offer a corrective remedy.

On your Part 3 examination the examiner will act as a student and you will need to ‘teach’ him or her as you would a real student and they will make their assessment on your performance.

No formal qualifications are required to train to become a Driving Instructor, but the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) require:

A full UK or European Union / European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence, held for at least four years.

No disqualification from driving at any time in the four years before you train.

The ability to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5 metres (90 feet).

An enhanced level Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check.

To be a ‘fit and proper’ person, in the opinion of the DSA.

Any motoring or non-motoring convictions will be taken into account when you’re assessed for inclusion on the Register.

If you do not feel able or ready to set up your own driving school, we can offer a ‘guaranteed job’ as a driving instructor with IDT local to home after Basic Training has been completed . This qualifies you for a DSA ‘Trainee Licence’ which allows you to teach real students full or part time, ‘earn while you learn’ and receive practical help and further training BEFORE taking your Part 3 examination.

Our training is carried out at your own pace and at a time to suit you. It often takes just 9 to 12 months to qualify but, if you have the time and you are a quick learner, it could be much less.

Many Training Companies insist on full payment before their courses start. We DO NOT. Our policy is the same as when teaching ‘learner’ students, where payments are normally taken on each lesson. We like you to sample our service so you pay-as-you-go at an amount you can afford. Just like a learner driver, who has the opportunity of changing their instructor if they are not satisfied with the teaching, we offer the same approach with your ADI Training. If at any time you are not happy, you can cancel your payments and bring it all to an end. All part payments are non-refundable once the Training has commenced.

We have a £50 non-returnable ‘Registration Fee’ for setting up all your Training details internally and if you do stop the Training, there will be another Registration Fee to pay if you wish to re-start.

Our Training Fees compare favourably with others in the business and you must consider your Training for Part 2 and Part 3 with IDT is based on a one-to-one Instructor to Trainer Basis – something some other training bodies would find impossible to match. We have been conducting ADI Training since 1973 and some of our original staff are still on the Consultancy Board. We have lots of practical experience in our veins.

The Total Cost for Part 1, 2 & 3 Basic Training to include Training, Manuals, Reference Books & Data Sheets is from £1798 (subject to Area and Availability).

If you need extra support, help is at hand. Our Training should fully prepare you for every stage of learning, but if you need extra Training it is available at cost to support you through either part 2 or part 3 Training.
